STRENGTH OF MATERIALS II

Course ID: IBU-SE>STRMAT2
Course title: STRENGTH OF MATERIALS II
Semester: 4 / Spring
ECTS: 4
Lectures/Classes: 15 / 30 hours
Field of study: Civil Engineering
Study cycle: 1st cycle
Type of course: compulsory
Prerequisites: General Mechanics I, Strength of Materials I
Contact person: dr inż. Małgorzata Meissner; malgorzata.meissner@upwr.edu.pl
Short description: Strength of materials determines the effects of internal forces on the rod systems i.e. stresses, strains, displacements and energy, taking into account mechanical and physical properties of material.
Full description: Bent beam deflection. Bending of statically indeterminate beam. Complex cases of strength of materials – bending with shearing, eccentric compression. Stability of straight rods. Strength hypotheses.
Bibliography: Ferdinand P. Beer, E. Russell Johnston, John T. Dewolf, David F. Mazurek, Statics and Mechanics of Materials, McGraw-Hill, New York, 2011 Timoshenko S., Strength of Materials, Part I Elementary Theory and Problems, D Van Nostrand and Co, New York and London, 1951
Learning outcomes: Knowledge Knows the effects of interial forces, and the conditions which must be met by a well-designed construction element subjected to any load. Understands basis of the strength of materials, i.e. stress tensor and strain tensor. Skills Can determine state of stress and strain in a construction element. Can dimension construction element subjected to any load. Social competences Can independently organize designer’s workshop Understand responsibility of the construction engineer at design and construction stage of modern structures.
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: grade obtained at classes (60%) + grade obtained at lectures (40%)
